See what your fixed deposit could be worth at maturity, and how much of it is interest.
An FD calculator estimates what a fixed deposit could be worth at maturity, with interest added every quarter. ₹1,00,000 for 5 years at 7% a year could grow to ₹1,41,478.

FD maturity formula
A = P × (1 + r ÷ 400)4t
- A
- Estimated value: what the deposit could be worth at the end.
- P
- The amount you invest at the start.
- r
- The yearly interest rate in %. Dividing by 400 turns it into a quarterly rate (÷ 4 quarters ÷ 100).
- t
- Tenure in years. 4t is the number of quarters.
This is a cumulative FD: interest is added to your deposit every quarter and earns interest itself. Quarterly compounding is the common method in Indian banks, but check your bank's terms.
Worked example
You invest ₹1,00,000 for 5 years at 7% a year. The quarterly rate is 7 ÷ 400 = 0.0175, over 20 quarters. So A = 1,00,000 × 1.017520.
- You invest
- ₹1,00,000
- Interest
- ₹41,478
- Estimated value
- ₹1,41,478
- Works like a yearly rate of
- 7.19%
What ₹1 lakh in an FD could grow to
A small change in rate adds up over time. At 8% instead of 6%, ₹1 lakh for 10 years could earn about ₹39,000 more.
| Rate a year | 1 year | 3 years | 5 years | 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6% | ₹1,06,136 | ₹1,19,562 | ₹1,34,686 | ₹1,81,402 |
| 7% | ₹1,07,186 | ₹1,23,144 | ₹1,41,478 | ₹2,00,160 |
| 8% | ₹1,08,243 | ₹1,26,824 | ₹1,48,595 | ₹2,20,804 |
Cumulative or quarterly payout?
Most banks offer two kinds of FD. In a cumulative FD, interest stays in the deposit and compounds. You get everything at maturity. This calculator shows that kind.
In a non-cumulative (payout) FD, the bank pays the interest to your savings account, often every quarter. Because it is paid out, it does not compound. Here is ₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years both ways:
- Quarterly payout
- ₹1,750 a quarter
- Total interest, payout
- ₹35,000
- Total interest, cumulative
- ₹41,478
Pick payout if you need a regular income. Pick cumulative if you don't need the money until the end.
Rates, tax and TDS
FD rates are set by each bank and change from time to time. They also depend on the tenure you choose. Senior citizens often get a slightly higher rate, so ask your bank.
FD interest is taxable. It is added to your income for the year. The bank may also deduct tax at source (TDS) from the interest. If your income is below the taxable limit, ask your bank which declaration form you can submit to avoid TDS. Check the Income Tax Department site for the current rules.
FD calculator FAQs
How is FD interest calculated?
Most banks add interest to a cumulative FD every quarter. Each quarter's interest then earns interest too. The calculator uses A = P × (1 + r ÷ 400)4t to show this.
What will ₹1 lakh be after 5 years in an FD?
At 7% a year, compounded quarterly, ₹1,00,000 could grow to about ₹1,41,478. Of that, ₹41,478 is interest. Your bank's rate decides the real figure.
Do senior citizens get a higher FD rate?
Many banks offer senior citizens a little extra on top of the normal rate. The extra amount differs by bank. Enter the senior rate your bank quotes to see the difference.
Is TDS deducted on FD interest?
It can be. Banks deduct TDS when interest crosses the limit set by the tax rules. TDS is not an extra tax: you can claim it against the tax you owe when you file your return.
What yearly rate does quarterly compounding work like?
It is the yearly rate that gives the same result with yearly compounding. Quarterly compounding at 7% works like 7.19% a year. At 8% it works like 8.24%.
Is the result exact?
It is an estimate before tax. Banks may round interest, count days differently or credit interest on set dates. The figure on your FD receipt is the one that counts.
