Post Office RD formula
M = Σ R × (1 + r/400)k/3, for k = 1 to 60
- M
- Estimated value after 60 months.
- R
- Your monthly deposit.
- r
- The yearly rate in %, for example 6.7. Dividing by 400 gives the rate for one quarter.
- k
- How many months a deposit stays in the account. Your first deposit stays 60 months, your last one stays 1 month.
Interest is compounded every quarter, so the k/3 counts quarters. This method reproduces the official RD table: ₹100 a month at 5.8% gives ₹6,969.67. For a bank RD we use the same formula. Banks may work it out slightly differently, so treat that figure as an approximation.
Worked example
You deposit ₹1,000 every month for 60 months at 6.7% a year. Your first ₹1,000 stays in for 60 months, or 20 quarters, and grows to about ₹1,394. Your last ₹1,000 stays in for just one month and grows to about ₹1,006. Add up all 60 deposits like this:
- You invest
- ₹60,000
- Interest
- ₹11,365.83
- Estimated value
- ₹71,365.83
What a Post Office RD could grow to at 6.7%
| Monthly deposit | You invest (60 months) | Interest | Estimated value |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹100 | ₹6,000 | ₹1,137 | ₹7,137 |
| ₹500 | ₹30,000 | ₹5,683 | ₹35,683 |
| ₹1,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹11,366 | ₹71,366 |
| ₹2,000 | ₹1,20,000 | ₹22,732 | ₹1,42,732 |
| ₹5,000 | ₹3,00,000 | ₹56,829 | ₹3,56,829 |
| ₹10,000 | ₹6,00,000 | ₹1,13,658 | ₹7,13,658 |
Post office or bank RD?
The post office rate is the same at every post office and is set by the government each quarter. Bank RD rates differ from bank to bank. Here is ₹1,000 a month for 5 years at a few rates, using the same formula:
- 6% (bank)
- ₹70,064
- 6.7% (post office)
- ₹71,366
- 7% (bank)
- ₹71,933
A difference of 0.3% a year changes the result by only a few hundred rupees on ₹1,000 a month. Compare rates, but also think about which one is easier for you to keep paying every month.
