- Open "See year by year". The first 15 rows are deposit years. The last 6 rows are interest-only years.
Sukanya Samriddhi formula
B = (B + D) × (1 + r), repeated for 21 years
- B
- The balance at the end of each year. It starts at ₹0.
- D
- Your yearly deposit in years 1 to 15. From year 16, D is ₹0.
- r
- The yearly rate ÷ 100. For 8.2%, r = 0.082.
The calculator assumes each deposit is made at the start of the financial year, by 5 April, so it earns a full year of interest. It also assumes the rate stays the same for all 21 years. The government reviews the rate every quarter, so the real figure will differ.
Worked example
You invest ₹1,50,000 at the start of every year for 15 years, at 8.2% a year. In year 1 the interest is ₹1,50,000 × 0.082 = ₹12,300. By the end of year 15 the balance is ₹44,75,989.
You then stop depositing. The balance keeps earning 8.2% for six more years and could reach ₹71,82,119 at 21 years.
- You invest
- ₹22,50,000
- Interest
- ₹49,32,119
- Estimated value
- ₹71,82,119
Deposit years vs interest-only years
SSY is unusual: you pay in for 15 years, but the account runs for 21. Here is ₹1,50,000 a year at 8.2%, for a girl aged 5 when the account is opened.
| Stage | Years | Her age | Balance at the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit years | 1 to 15 | 6 to 20 | ₹44,75,989 |
| Interest-only years | 16 to 21 | 21 to 26 | ₹71,82,119 |
The six years with no deposits add about ₹27.06 lakh of interest. That is more than all the money you put in.
What SSY could grow to at 8.2%
| Yearly deposit | You invest (15 years) | Estimated value at 21 years |
|---|---|---|
| ₹250 | ₹3,750 | ₹11,970 |
| ₹12,000 | ₹1,80,000 | ₹5,74,570 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹7,50,000 | ₹23,94,040 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹15,00,000 | ₹47,88,079 |
| ₹1,50,000 | ₹22,50,000 | ₹71,82,119 |
₹12,000 a year is ₹1,000 a month. If you deposit monthly, pay before the 5th so the money earns that month's interest.
