How to use this gratuity calculator
- Choose Permanent or Fixed-term. A fixed-term job has an end date in your contract.
- Enter your last monthly basic pay plus dearness allowance (DA). Leave out HRA, bonus and other allowances.
- Enter your years of service, then the extra months. For 10 years and 7 months, type 10 and 7.
- Read your estimated gratuity. If you are not eligible yet, the card tells you how many months to go and about how much you would get on reaching eligibility.
Gratuity formula
Gratuity = 15 ÷ 26 × W × Y
- W
- Your last monthly wages: basic pay plus DA.
- Y
- Years of service. A final part-year of more than 6 months counts as a full year.
- 15
- You get 15 days' wages for each year of service.
- 26
- A month is taken as 26 working days, so one day's wage is W ÷ 26.
The calculator assumes your service was continuous with one employer. Your employer works out the final amount. The result is capped at ₹20 lakh, the maximum notified on 29 March 2018 (PIB).
Worked example
Your last basic pay plus DA is ₹60,000 a month. You worked for 10 years and 7 months as a permanent employee.
- 7 months is more than 6, so your service counts as 11 years.
- One day's wage is ₹60,000 ÷ 26 = ₹2,307.69. Fifteen days is ₹34,615.
- Gratuity = 15 ÷ 26 × ₹60,000 × 11 = ₹3,80,769.
- Years counted
- 11
- For each year
- ₹34,615
- Estimated gratuity
- ₹3,80,769
With 10 years and exactly 6 months, only 10 years would count.

Gratuity calculator FAQs
Will I get gratuity after 4 years 8 months?
As a permanent employee, the standard rule is 5 years of continuous service, so you would have 4 months to go. If you are on a fixed-term contract, you qualify after 1 year. Ask your employer's HR team how they count your service.
Who gets gratuity after 1 year?
Fixed-term employees: people hired for a set period under a contract. Under the Code on Social Security, 2020, they qualify after 1 year of continuous service. Permanent employees still need 5 years.
What counts as wages for gratuity?
Basic pay plus dearness allowance (DA), and retaining allowance if you get one. HRA, bonus and overtime usually don't count. But if they add up to more than 50% of your total pay, the extra is added back to wages.
Do I get gratuity if I resign?
Yes, if you have completed the service needed: 5 years for permanent staff, or 1 year for fixed-term staff. Gratuity is paid when you leave, whether you resign, retire or your contract ends.
Why divide by 26?
The formula takes a month as 26 working days, leaving out 4 weekly offs. So one day's wage is your monthly wage ÷ 26, and 15 days' wages is 15 ÷ 26 of a month's pay.
Is there a maximum gratuity?
Yes. The maximum is ₹20 lakh, notified on 29 March 2018 (PIB), and this calculator caps the result there. Your employer may pay more under its own policy. Central Government employees have their own rules, with a ₹25 lakh maximum from 1 January 2024 (PIB).
