How to use this PPF calculator

  1. Enter how much you plan to deposit each year, from ₹500 to ₹1,50,000.
  2. Keep the rate at 7.1%, the current PPF rate, or try a lower or higher rate to see the range.
  3. Choose the years. PPF matures after 15 years. You can extend it in blocks of 5 years, so try 20, 25 or 30.
  4. Open "See year by year" to see the interest for each year. Share or copy the link to keep your numbers.

PPF formula

A = D × [(1 + r)n − 1] ÷ r × (1 + r)

A
Estimated value: what the account could be worth at the end.
D
The amount you invest every year.
r
The yearly rate ÷ 100. For 7.1%, r = 0.071.
n
Number of years.

PPF interest is worked out every month and added once a year. The final × (1 + r) assumes you deposit by 5 April each year, so every deposit earns a full year of interest. The calculator also assumes the rate stays the same, which it may not.

Worked example

You invest ₹1,50,000 at the start of every year for 15 years, at 7.1% a year. In year 1, the interest is ₹1,50,000 × 0.071 = ₹10,650. In year 2, your ₹1,60,650 plus the new ₹1,50,000 earns ₹22,056.

What PPF could grow to at 7.1%

Extending matters more than you might think. Five more years of ₹1,50,000 deposits could take ₹40.68 lakh to ₹66.58 lakh.

Why deposit by 5 April

PPF pays interest each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of that month. So money that arrives after the 5th earns nothing for that month. A deposit made by 5 April earns interest for all 12 months of the financial year.

Here is ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1%, deposited at different times each year:

By 5 April
₹40,68,209
Between 6 April and 5 May
₹40,45,735
In March, after the 5th
₹37,98,515

Depositing at the end of the year instead of the start could cost about ₹2.7 lakh over 15 years. If you deposit monthly, aim to pay before the 5th of each month.

PPF rules and limits

  • Deposit at least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year.
  • The rate has been 7.1% a year since 1 April 2020; the rate history runs to 30 September 2026. The government reviews it every quarter, so check the current rate.
  • The account matures 15 full financial years after the end of the year you open it.
  • After that, you can extend it with deposits in blocks of 5 years. You apply in Form-4 within one year of maturity. Or you can keep it open without deposits, and it keeps earning interest.
  • Loans are allowed from the 3rd to the 6th financial year. Withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year.

PPF calculator FAQs

What is the PPF interest rate in 2026?

7.1% a year, the rate since April 2020 (the official rate history runs to September 2026). The government sets it every quarter, so it can change during your 15 years.

What will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF give after 15 years?

At 7.1%, deposited by 5 April every year, about ₹40,68,209. You invest ₹22,50,000 and the rest, ₹18,18,209, is interest.

Why deposit before the 5th?

Interest for a month is paid on the lowest balance between the 5th and the month's end. Money that arrives on the 6th misses that month's interest.

How does a PPF extension work?

After 15 years you can extend in blocks of 5 years and keep depositing. You must apply within one year of maturity. You can also keep the account without deposits; it still earns interest.

Can I withdraw from PPF early?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, and loans from the 3rd to the 6th. The scheme rules set how much. During a 5-year extension with deposits, withdrawals in the block are capped at 60% of the balance at its start.

Is PPF interest tax-free?

The National Savings Institute states that PPF interest is free from income tax, and that deposits qualify for a deduction under Section 80C of the old Income-tax Act. The new Income-tax Act 2025 renumbers sections, so check the current rules for your tax regime.
